What is Ivermectin (Stromectol)?
Sold under the brand name of Stromectol, Ivermectin is an antiparasitic medication popular among both animals and humans. Ivermectin is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic medication used in the treatment of several infections. It has recently been included in the WHO list of essential medicines list. Ivermectin belongs to a group of medications called Anthelmintics – a group of antiparasitic medications that expels parasitic worms or internal parasites from the body by stunning or killing them without causing any damage to the host.
What is Ivermectin used for?
In veterinary medicine, Ivermectin pills is used to treat ascariasis (a mite infestation) and animal heartworms. In human beings, Ivermectin 12 mg is used predominantly to treat parasitic infections like head lice and scabies. It is an important medication used to treat river blindness, a parasitic infection caused by the worm Onchocerca Volvulus and that of Strongyloidiasis, a roundworm infection. It is also used in the treatment of heartworm and whipworm infections and is used to treat lymphatic filariasis, a human disease caused by filarial worms. Quite recently, Ivermectin tablets is being recognized as a trial medication for Covid-19 patients and used strictly for laboratory tests for the Sars-Cov-19 virus.
How does Ivermectin work?
Ivermectin is believed to stun or kill the parasites by enabling the excessive release of neurotransmitters in the peripheral nervous system of the parasites. It works by paralyzing the parasitic gut so as to render them useless and kill their larvae, after which they are effectively removed from the body. Ivermectin is said to bind to the proteins secreted by the young worms to block the host’s immune system so that once the immune system is back on track, the white blood cells can kill the worms. It also slows down the rate at which the adult worms reproduce to decrease their symptomatic effect on the body.
Ivermectin and Covid
Not approved by the FDA to treat Covid 19. So you can buy Stromectol or Ivermectin only for the treatment of parasitic infection caused by worms.
How long does it take for Ivermectin to work?
The dose of Ivermectin depends on the person’s weight and the infection for which the medication is being administered. Ivermectin is usually applied as a cream, given in the form of oral tablets that take a slightly longer time to work, or through a subcutaneous injection that works quicker. The peak levels of Ivermectin are usually achieved within 2-5 hours of administration. It has a half-life of 18 hours, after which it is excreted mostly through faeces and a small amount through the urine. It is important to remember that despite its significant effect on the parasites through the human body, it does not cross the blood-brain barrier, which makes it a very safe option as a medication.
